Hello,

I am a family medicine graduate from 2019, currently at a locums position in Chicago, Illinois, but I will be joining the HIV Clinical leadership fellowship in Los Angeles County this July 2021.

Most of my HIV experience has been overseas for the most part. During my training I was able to do a tropical medicine rotation in rural Kenya and my first job out of residency was with Doctors Without Borders as the TB/HIV doctor in a UN camp in South Sudan.

I want to continue doing global health and be part of that generation of clinicians to help lower the rates of HIV in hard hit places like Africa, but  I do get confused of how to go about this as I want to balance a career here in the US. I really am having a hard time finding mentors and like-minded clinicians who can sort of guide me to how to get my career a bit more focused. I've been feeling all over the place and I am not really too sure how to go about my interests. Doctors Without Borders will always have my heart in terms of NGOs and an organization to work for, but they are an emergency organization and may not contribute fully to the overall long-term development of HIV programs in their areas of work.

I was curious to know how many people here have been able to contribute to the fight against HIV overseas? How have you been able to balance that with a career here in the US? Any organizations I could get myself associated with now? 

I'd love to connect and speak to you if this applies. I feel like I am in desperate need of a mentor.

P.S. Also, I am highly interested in developing a mobile app, not only for the patient, but for the HIV program. One of the main problems I experienced in South Sudan was that our records were being placed in those large record books that were often inaccurate and the patient would not be able to receive notifications if they were late for medications or needed labs done. I am doing a literature review now of technology that exists, but if anyone has any advice or suggestion, I am open to take those as well!

Welcome to our community. Great Job working with Global health. I am so much interested with developing a mobile app for our patient. I work with an NGO primarily providing HIV care and I trust a mobile app will be great tool for clients especially with setting reminders for medications and lab work.

Hi Earl,

Welcome to the community! It's great to hear about your passion for HIV and global health. I am also someone with a deep interest in global health. I have participated in a couple of medical mission trips, but nothing as intensive as Doctors Without Borders. I am very much interested, but I have found limited opportunities open to clinical pharmacists. I'm intrigued to learn more about your idea for a mobile app. I've been trying to find ways to merge my love for HIV management, global health, and a new found interest in programming.
