  • 1.  Body donations for HIV + individuals

    Posted 05-18-2021 09:18
Hi everyone, I haven't been on here in a while and it's nice to be back.  A patient has stumped me on a question, so I thought I'd pose it to the group for feedback/answers.  Does anyone know of any institutions that will take HIV+ bodies for donation after death.  My patient has pointed out to me that the University of California schools do not take HIV + bodies, which I find very surprising.  Thank you in advance for your time and expertise!

    Hi Dr. Adams,

UCSD and UCSF exclude donations from individuals with HIV, however organ donations may be possible. Click on the links to obtain more information.

    Hi James Adam's.
Hope you are still enjoying the wonders of the desert world.
Contact Davy Smith at UCSD (d13smith@health.UCSD.edu).
He and others have an HIV cure program at UCSD called Last Gift.
Your patient may want to check this.

    Hi,
there is a program based out of UCSD, funded through NIAID, call "Last Gift", that has been active for a few years, and sub-contracts lots of additional research out to teams across the country.  For example, we have a program looking at kidney tissue on a subcontract.

    may be worth exploring

and THANK your patient for considering - that's such an amazing gift!!!
    Cameron
