We also use the Z12.12.
What we found to be useful is the documentation of the visit. We document "while the patient was in the office, we discussed the importance of anal PAP, and the patient agreed".
We found that doing it this way instead of putting in reason for visit, Anal Pap, or anal cancer screeeing etc, we can get it covered. We only document in the medical decision making section about this.

I always use Z12.12 with secondary code of B20. I've been doing this since May 2020. To my knowledge, there hasn't been any push back from insurance companies and we haven't have patients complaining about procedure not being covered.

Hi all
My clinic is about to launch a pilot anal pap smear program beginning with our MSM population living with HIV. Wondering what ICD 10 code you all use for this?
Z12.12Encounter for screening for malignant neoplasm of rectum
looks most appropriate... Are there any pitfalls in getting this preventive screening reimbursed?
thanks!
