Good morning Everyone,
A few of my patients are Hepatitis c positive and are interested in PrEp. One of them has an ALT of 122. My plan is not to prescribe the PrEp and to repeat his Hepatic enzymes in a month before prescribing PrEp (Descovy) and refer him to an Hepatologist. Does anyone has any other suggestions on how to safely care for Hep C patients who would like to be on PrEp ?
Thanks in advance for all your input.
The meds we use currently for PrEP should have low hepatic risk, and there would certainly be risk of seroconversion if PrEP is not prescribed. Personally, I would definitely prescribe PrEP and monitor hepatic function closely. Since it appears that certain populations can transmit HCV sexually, I would encourage consistent condom use and get these patients treated to eradicate HCV. Hope that makes sense.
Thanks Adam for your input. Greatly appreciated.
I treat Hep C in primary care in KY. Does he have a HCV RNA viral load or just the antibody to hep C? Has the pt been treated before for their Hep C?
The patient has only the antibody to hep C done at this time. The patient started the treatment for Hep C but didn't complete it.
